The newspaper art of Fred Heyman
"Freddy" as his friends knew him was a born graphic artist. He dropped out of high school after tenth grade in 1921 to work at the Syracuse Herald Journal. He stayed there for a remarkable 69 years.

Cartooning was not his main job - he directed all the newspaper's graphic operations, principally photo editing and page layout. But cartoons and drawings were what caught the public's eye and they are what he is remembered for. Their exuberance and detail capture the golden age of daily newspapers in Syracuse.

Fred Heyman was born March 5, 1906 at Brooklyn, NY and died June 16, 1992 at Ithaca, NY. This website is a loving tribute to him and his work from his children Cheryl Heyman Kantak and Scott Heyman.
